7 important factors in choosing a web host. Ensure your host supports number 2.

choosing a host

choosing a host as a SEO

Ok, now you have graduated from been a mere enthusiast about online business. You actually want to host your website. Perhaps you have hosted the site already. Question is, which hosting provider is best for your site? If you are a Nigerian it is common to run to Whogohost or any of the other companies that accept the local currency, the Nigerian Naira. I must confess that they are pretty cheaper too.

However, due care should be applied in choosing a website host. So where should you host your site and why?

What is the best Hosting Company

In simple terms the best hosting companies are the hosts that:

  1. have Security
  2. Have speed
  3. uptime is high
  4. has good customer support

Other things to look out for in a good server hosting company are

  • pricing
  • storage/broadband space
  • addons like cpanel

The 3 most important web and Mobile hosting factors

Among the factors to considered in choosing a website host enumerated above, security, speed and support or the 3 S’s as described by Adam Berry Also of high importance is the server uptime. These are the most crucial in choosing a host.

Let me explain more what these hosting factors mean:

Security:

Today’s fragile cyber security environment has made it necessary for web hosts to have SSL certificate especially, hosts that will be hosting ecommerce sites. No one will put their credit/debit card details on a website that is not secured. The same way, no webmaster should host his site on a host that does not have SSL certificate.

Thankfully, most hosting companies today include SSL into their various hosting plans. The hosting company will often list SSL as a feature of the plan if it is contained in it.

Speed:

This is one of the most important factors in choosing a web host. However, this factor is underestimated. All things being equal, a slow website will rank lower than its competition thats loads faster.

When it comes to speed, One’s server host is the most important determinant. even before the coding of the site, javascript usage and server requests.

why Choose a particular hosting company?

The importance of speed can not be overemphasized, Google recommends reducing your server response time under 200ms. What this means is that, any hosting company that takes more than 1 second to load will cause more harm than good.

Here is a real time statistic on speed. Amazon will lose more than $1.6b if their server delays a second more to load. Now a second more may still be 3x faster than your site’s speed. What this means is that you must pay close attention to your site’s speed.

Pro tip on determining server speed

To know if the host of a site is slow or fast, take a url(website address) of that site and enter it on third party server speed site like bitcatcha.com and the speed will be shown as in the below image.

The above image is the server speed of my site when it was on the former host. Fast forward to today, I’m on a new server host and my site speed is exceptionally good. This has also reduced my site’s bounce rate. See the speed rate in the next image

Uptime rate

Closely related to speed is server uptime. A hosting company with server uptime of more than 99% is advised. Anything less than that will mean your site will be down for a significant period of time. No serious site owner wants that for his/her site. Sites like hostgator, godaddy.com ipage and Bluehost.com have a reputation for high uptime. My site is hosted on Namecheap.

Customer Support

In choosing a hosting company, it is important to opt for a company with reputation for good and prompt customer support. This is very important especially if you are a newbie in hosting a website. You would likely require assistance and guidance by a real human being in completing your hosting.

Most providers offer multiple levels of support, such as email, toll-free phone, live chat, and more.

Pricing

The cost of a hosting plan is important in choosing a hosting company to host your site on. It is pointless to pay too much attention on price though. However, an exorbitant hosting would reduce ROI. You can pay for a good shared hosting at not more than 30,000 naira (about $85) per anum.

Storage

It is important to choose a host with a large, storage space that will be sufficient to host all your site’s content. If you own a small blog, storage space wouldn’t be so much an issue, but large sites like music streaming sites and ecommerce that upload so many multimedia will require unlimited storage or a lot of storage space.

Add-ons

In addition to the features we have seen so far, It is also important for a web hosting company to have such add-ons as cpanel, Sql, site back up, google advertising credits etc. Such hosts as hostgator, bluehost.com, godaddy etc. provide these add-ons.
